Book Review: A Monster Calls By Patrick Ness

A Monster CallsA Monster Calls By Patrick Ness

Goodreads Synopsis: The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truthMy Rating: Well guys I don’t know what it is but I’ve been having some bad luck with books lately. This was another book that I’ve heard a lot of hype about and I was super excited to read it but didn’t enjoy. Sadly I didn’t feel the same way that everyone else did about this book. I’m not sure what it was about this book but I just couldn’t get into it. It’s such a shame because this is a book I’ve been wanting to read for a while now.

I do have to say the one thing that really impressed me with this book was the artwork. I was blown away by it. It was so dark and mysterious. It ended up being really well done. I would stop every once and a while just to admire it. I gotta admit I wasn’t expecting that in a children’s book but I’m honestly happy it was there. It ended up making me boost up the rating.

I also have to admit I am a bit shocked I didn’t end up crying at the end of this book. Before I ended up reading this book a lot of people would talk about how sad it was. So I mean I kinda expected the ending for the most part. I get emotional easy so when I was at the end I was getting myself for the water works but honestly nothing happened. I was pretty shocked.

Overall I didn’t enjoy this book like I hoped I would. I feel like I might have to give it another try at some point. The artwork did not disappoint. It was amazing. If there is anyway I could get any of the artwork framed I totally would. I most likely will be checking out the movie because I am super curious to see how that is. I’m hoping it will help me get into the book.

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.

    1. I was surprised because I heard nothing but great things but I couldn’t get into it 😦 I thought I would be emotional but I guess because I didn’t get into the story it didn’t effect me as everyone else. I am glad you enjoyed it. Have you watched the movie?
