Top Ten Tuesday: Books That Surprised Me (in a good or bad way)

Hey guys it’s been a little while since I’ve done another Top Ten Tuesday. I decided for this week I’m going to pick 5 books that surprised me in a good way and 5 books that surprised me in a bad way. I just wanted to switch things up a little this week. So let’s dive in

Books That Surprised Me In a Good Way

Rough RidersRough Riders Volume 1 By Adam Glass and Pat Olliffe

Reason: This was a book I randomly found out about. It sounded super interesting but I haven’t heard much about it. It ended up really surprising me. I found it super unique and very enjoyable. I would highly recommend this if you’re into comics.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo By Taylor Jenkins Reid

Reason: This was a book I heard about last year. I was really drawn to the cover. I didn’t pick it up until last month. Boy was I upset I waited so long. I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. It was very well done. I really need a physical copy of this book.

Lady Mechanika Vol. 1Lady Mechanika, Vol. 1: The Mystery of the Mechanical Corpse By Joe Benitez

Reason: This is a comic my boyfriend randomly found out about. I finally decided to read it when I saw it was on Netgalley in the Read Now section. I ended up really enjoying this comic a lot. The artwork is so well done. I love the steampunk outfits. The story is also very enjoyable. I can’t wait for more volumes to come out! I  highly recommend this comic too.

The Wife Between UsThe Wife Between Us By Geer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

Reason: Omg this book surprised me in the best way possible. It had so many twists and turns. I was not expecting it to be this good. I really enjoyed this book a lot.

StarflightStarflight by Melissa Landers

Reason: This isn’t the types of books that I’m drawn to. So I was surprised I ended up liking it so much. I felt it was a very fun and enjoyable story. It was very action pack. I have been wanting to read it again because it was such a good time.

Books That Surprised Me In a Bad Way

The Trees Crept InThe Trees Crept in By Dawn Kurtagich

Reason: This was a book I was so excited to read. I had heard nothing but amazing things. So you can tell how surprised I was when I tried to read it and couldn’t get into it at all. I honestly had no idea what was happening most of the time. I think it might have been the writing that threw me off.

the-girlsThe Girls By Emma Cline

Reason: This was a book I kept seeing that it was such a must read. I am sad to say I did not find this book enjoyable at all. It was described to be based on the Manson murders. Well I found that not to be the case at all. It was more like a coming of age story if anything. I really was disappointed by it.

Dark MatterDark Matter By Blake Crouch

Reason: This was a book I kept seeing get very good ratings from a lot of other people. So I ended up asking for it for Christmas. Well big surprise here, I ended up not enjoying it at all. I couldn’t get into the story. I found myself not being able to focus. I also was confused what was going on most of the time. This really wasn’t the book for me.

49 Every Day

Every Day By David Levithan

Reason: I feel I picked this book for this list because people have been talking about it since the movie came out. This sounded like it would be an interesting book. Sadly once again I really didn’t like it. It’s an instant romance right from the start and I really disliked that. I felt this story had so much potential to be really interesting but it’s solely a romance book. I just had different expectations for this book.

6 The Martian

The Martian By Andy Weir

Reason: I was so excited to read this book when I heard they were making it into a movie. I was sad when I finally started reading it that I did not enjoy it at all. I found it very technical a lot of the time. I did not understand what the author was talking about. This is one of the times I found the movie to be better than the book.

What are some books that surprised you in a good way? What are some books that surprised you in a bad way? I would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I am 75% into Evelyn Hugo right now… and I can’t believe I didn’t pick it up soon. And, more importantly, I can’t believe it is honestly worth the hype. Like, there should be even more hype. This is a damn masterpiece of a book! So happy you included it! Also… *sips all the tea* Same about The Martian, love. Haha. Happy reading! 💗xx

    1. It’s funny because I’ve had it taken out from the library for months and then randomly I got an urge to pick it up. It really deserves all the hype and more. After I read it I was like all my friends need this book. Deff will be buying it for birthdays. I need my own copy of. Omg I am so glad I’m not alone when it comes to The Martian. I feel like it has mainly high ratings and I’m just like I barley understood the book. Happy reading to you too!! 😀

  2. Great list! I’m so excited to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Starflight sounds great. YA sci-fi is very hit or miss for me, but I’ve been curious about that one for a while 🙂

    1. I really can’t wait to hear what you think of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I feel lately I’ve been seeing a lot of people reading it and I haven’t seen anything bad about it. That makes me so happy. Yeah I was surprised by Starflight. I feel sci-fi isn’t what I normally read but it was a lot of fun and very action packed. I hope you end up enjoying!
