Hey guys! So last year I made a post talking about new to me authors and I really liked that. I thought it would be fun to do it again this year. I feel I ended up reading a good amount of authors that were new to me. Some who I have been wanting to read for a while now. I’m not going to talk about all those authors since there are so many. I want to talk about ones that stood out to me and I want to read more from. So let’s dive in!
Peter Swanson
Peter Swanson is an author who I have been wanting to read for a while now. He is a very popular thriller/mystery writer. I have heard such amazing things about his books. So I finally picked up two of his books this year. One I really enjoyed and the other one I wasn’t a fan of. To be fair the one I didn’t like dealt with some things that really creeped me out. You can find my review for All The Beautiful Lies here. So you can see what I didn’t like about it. I can tell though that I will enjoy his other books. So more Peter Swanson in 2020.
Peter Kruger
So this book wasn’t on my radar until I saw it for the Dragons & Tea Book Club. It sounded very interesting to me. So I decided I would join in and read it with them. I ended up really enjoying this one a lot. I liked how it mixed alcoholic drinks with powers. I thought it was such a cool concept and such a fun read. This is something I’d love for them to turn into a movie or TV show.
Oyinkan Braithwaite
So this was another book that fully wasn’t on my radar. I was interested in the title but I don’t think I would have picked it up as soon. Thankfully one of the girls in my buddy read group picked it and read it. I really enjoyed it. It was such a quick read and grabbed my attention until the end. I would love to read more from this author in the future.
Christine Lynn Herman
I had been really looking forward to Christine’s book since last year. So the moment it came out I made sure to get it. I really liked this story a lot. It gave me all the creepy vibes that I needed. This is a book that I will need to refresh and reread once the sequel comes out. I am just excited to read more from this author.
Samantha Downing
I really loved Samantha’s debut thriller novel. I thought it was so suspenseful and the ending had me shocked. I was not ready for it. I was drawn right away from the summary. I know she has another book that is coming out in 2020. I really can’t wait to read more from her. If her second one is anything like the first, I know it will be a hit.
Alex Michaelides
So I’m sure you guys aren’t surprised to see Alex Michaelides on this list. He just won thriller book of the year in the goodreads choice awards. I have to say I really enjoyed this book a lot. It was such a great and surprising read. I loved the ending so much. I also thought the writing was just so well done. So super excited to see what he comes out with next.
Adam Silvera
Adam is another author that I’ve wanted to read for a while. I got very lucky and won this from a giveaway. I ended up reading They Both Die At The End right away. I thought it was just super fun and also extremely heartbreaking. There were a lot of cool things in this book that you could do for the last day of your life. Plus the end broke me. Still not over that ending.
Casey McQuiston
So Casey’s another new debut author in 2019. I had seen a lot of people talking about her book and I was intrigued. The plot sounded right up my alley so I buddy read it. I ended up really enjoying it a lot. I like that it didn’t shy away from sex. I mean there isn’t much detail but you have an idea what’s happening. I know it’s new adult so more adult topics are explored but I feel it should be that way in YA as well. Anyway Casey’s book was great and so fun. I know she’s working on something for 2021 so I will be looking forward to that.
Kalyn Josephson
So Kalyn’s book wasn’t really on my radar. It had a cool cover but I doubt I would have picked it up. However I wanted to do a buddy read with Kal @ Reader Voracious. This book really sounded interesting. Plus I don’t read a lot of fantasy, so always nice to switch it up. This book was so well done and just super enjoyable. It deals with certain topics like depression really well. I honestly can’t wait for the sequel to come out.
Elizabeth Acevedo
So I think Elizabeth Acevedo is honestly one of my new favorite authors of 2019. I picked this book on a whim. I really wasn’t excepting to like it as much as I did. It was a pick for a readathon that was a book out of my comfort zone. It’s not in the normal format I read. It’s poetry. I decided to check out the audiobook for it and I’m sure glad I did. Elizabeth reads the story and it honestly is the best decision they made. She reads the story with so much emotion. It really helps you to connect with the story. She has such a powerful voice. It really just adds so much to the experience. I really can’t wait to read more from her.
So those are some of the new to me authors that really stood out for me. I know I plan on reading more from these authors in 2020. Some of these authors, I will be anxiously waiting for their next release. I can’t wait either way.
What are some new to you authors that you read this year?
Bookish In Bed
I had so much fun buddy reading The Storm Crow with you and I am so glad you loved it so much since it is outside of what you normally would pick up!!!
