My July Movie Wrap-up

Hey guys I am back with another movie wrap-up. It has been a while since I did a proper one. I have been watching so many movies the last couple of months. I definitely believe I will hit 100 before the end of the year. I do feel July was a bit of an iffy month for movies. I watched a couple I enjoyed and then others I wasn’t too found of. So let’s dive in and see what I watched.

The Wrong MissyThe Wrong Missy Directed By Tyler Spindel

Genre: Comedy, Romance
Runtime: 90 mins
Released: May 13th 2020
Rating: TV-MA

Plot: Tim thinks he’s invited the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date.

My Thoughts: So my boyfriend and I just wanted a movie to watch. We didn’t have high hopes for this one but didn’t want to put on anything serious. Well this movie really was just super cringey and we couldn’t wait for it to be over. At one point my stepmom came down to say hi to our cats and just kept the movie on so it would be over faster. It was very forgettable.

MASHM*A*S*H Directed By Robert Altman

Genre: Comedy, Drama, War
Runtime: 116 mins
Released: May 18th 1970
Rating: R

Plot: The staff of a Korean War field hospital use humor and high jinks to keep their sanity in the face of the horror of war.

My Thoughts: So my boyfriend wanted to watch this because he had started reading Catch-22. I decided to watch too because I know M*A*S*H got turned into a popular tv show. However I feel it had some funny moments but just dragged on. It basically is just a bunch of random stories with the same characters. I wasn’t really into it.

EnemyEnemy Directed By Denis Villeneuve

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Runtime: 91 mins
Released: February 6th 2014
Rating: R

Plot: A man seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie.

My Thoughts: I saw someone talk about how good this movie was. I am a Jake Gyllenhaal fan so I decided I would check this out. I just felt so confused the entire time. I wasn’t really sure of the ending either. I did look it up later on. I always never realize what the meaning behind movies are until I actually decide to look it up. I also just felt bored during the movie. Jake Gyllenhaal did an amazing job. He played two different people. This just wasn’t the movie for me. I did find out after that this was based on a movie. I had no idea about that going into this. I am not sure I’ll check out the book though.

DriveDrive Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn

Genre: Drama, Crime
Runtime: 100 mins
Released: September 18th 2011
Rating: R

Plot: A mysterious Hollywood stuntman and mechanic moonlights as a getaway driver and finds himself in trouble when he helps out his neighbor in this action drama.

My Thoughts: I found this just to such an enjoyable movie. It had such a great cast. I thought everyone did such an amazing job. Plus the whole movie looked so good. It was just so well shot. It was also very action packed. There was never a dull moment. I highly recommend checking this one out.

Palm SpringsPalm Springs Directed By Max Barbakow

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery, Romance
Runtime: 90 mins
Released: July 10th 2020
Rating: R

Plot: When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated as they are unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.

My Thoughts: I had seen the trailer for this and was very intrigued. Last year I watched Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2. So I was very into the whole same day repeating itself. Plus I am an Andy Samberg fan so I figured I’d have to check it out. It did the a lot of the things you’d except from a movie where someone is living in the same day. It included another person in the loop. So I enjoyed that they had to figure out together how they were going to get out of this situation. It was cute and had some funny moments.

End of WatchEnd of Watch Directed By David Ayer

Genre: Action, Crime, Drama, Thriller
Runtime: 109 mins
Released: September 21 2012
Rating: R

Plot: Shot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends, and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.

My Thoughts: This movie was so good. I randomly decided to put it on. I have to say it was sooo good. I feel I would have given this a full 5 stars if it was filmed differently. There were just certain scenes that didn’t make sense for people to be having cameras filming themselves. Mainly the scenes where people were committing crimes. You wouldn’t want your face shown and in those scenes you could see the culprits faces. Overall it was super action packed. They was always something going down. It definitely is one of my favorites I watched this year.

The Big LebowskiThe Big Lebowski Directed By Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Genre: Comedy, Crime, Sport
Runtime: 109 mins
Released: March 8th 1998
Rating: R

Plot: Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.

My Thoughts: This is a movie I have heard about for so long. I knew I eventually had to watch it. Everyone says how funny it is. I mean it had it’s moments but I felt it just dragged on. I really wasn’t a fan. I felt it really could have been shorter than it was. I just found myself zoning out a lot of the time. It was a shame cause I really thought I was going to like this movie more than I actually did.

VivariumVivarium Directed By  Lorcan Finnegan

Genre: Comedy, Horror, Mystery, Sci-fi
Runtime: 97 mins
Released: March 27th 2020
Rating: R

Plot: A young couple looking for the perfect home find themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth-like neighborhood of identical houses.

My Thoughts: This was probably the worst movie I ended up watching this year. I thought the concept was super interesting. However they had like a 20 minute scene of them trying to leave the neighborhood and them just ending up back to the house they started out. It was like we get it they can’t leave okay please move on. Also they are randomly given a child and it ages extremely fast and when it is a kid it would not stop screaming. It happened multiple times and it was extremely annoying. We ended up turning off the movie because it ended up annoying us and our cats.

A Scanner DarklyA Scanner Darkly By Richard Linklater

Genre: Animation, Crime, Drama, Mystery, Sci-fi, Thriller
Runtime: 100 mins
Released: July 9th 2006
Rating: R

Plot: An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result.

My Thoughts: This movie was another one that kinda just flew over my head. I honestly was confused about what was going on. I know you’re supposed to be for majority of the movie. Even in the end I was as well. My boyfriend basically explained it to me so I did get it. I think it was just a bit weird for my liking. I do have to say the animation was awesome. I would love to see how they would do this movie now. I do have to say I love the message from Philip K. Dick at the end of the movie.

What a Girl WantsWhat A Girl Wants Directed By Dennie Gordon

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Family, Romance
Runtime: 105 mins
Released: April 4th 2003
Rating: PG

Plot: An American teenager learns that her father is a wealthy British politician running for office. Although she is eager to find him, she realizes it could cause a scandal and cost him the election.

My Thoughts: I really was just in the mood to rewatch this movie because it had been so long since I had seen it. It was really enjoyable. I do miss all these cheesy 2000 movies. They don’t make them like they use to. I also ended up getting super emotional at the end. Why am I like this?

Ghost In The Shell 2.0Ghost in a Shell 2.0 Directed By Mamoru Oshii

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Crime, Drama, Family, Sci-fi
Runtime: 83 mins
Released: July 12th 2008
Rating: TV-14

Plot: A hacker known as the Puppet Master is hunted by a female cyborg cop and her partner. This film is a revised version of Ghost in the Shell

My Thoughts: I have to say I still don’t really fully understand this movie. I really can’t tell you what happened because I don’t really know. I did think it had an interesting concept but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. We did watch the version that was in English and I wasn’t a fan of the main actress’s voice acting. It just fell flat. I wouldn’t mind re-watching this in Japanese with subtitles.

What movies did you guys see in February? Any movies you recommend I watch? Have you seen any of the movies I listed? I would love to hear your thoughts!

      1. Omg that sounds like the perfect way to spend the first week of Disney+. This morning I was reminded of Phantom at the Megaplex. My friend said it was on there and now I’m yelling at myself for slacking on getting it.
