Blogmas Day 20: New To Me Authors

Hey guys! Today I thought I would share with you some of the authors I read that were new to me this year. I originally wanted to talk about all of them but I had a lot. So I decided I would just narrow it down. I wanted to talk about authors I enjoyed and would pick up more of their books. So let’s dive in to see who those authors are.

Ashley Poston

I read Geekerella and The Princess and the Fangirl this year. I really enjoyed both. I do want to read more from her. I have been wanting to read Bookish and the Beast. I just have been pushing it off from the library. I thought both stories were so cute and fluffy. Honestly just what I was looking for in the beginning of this year.

Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan is an author I hear people talk about a lot. I have always heard good things about his books just never picked them up. I decided to buddy read the first book in Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I ended up really enjoying it. It was such a fun time. I can see why people like the series so much. I only read the first book but would like to continue on with the series.

Stephen Graham Jones

I ended up reading a short story book by Stephen that I really did not like. I had no idea what was happening in it at all. However I did read another short story by him in a short story collection that I enjoyed. I did try reading Night of the Mannequins but had to return it before finishing. He did have some other books I had my eye on as well. So I would like to check out more from him in the future.

Megan McCafferty

I feel like I really slept on Megan’s books. I did own Sloppy Firsts when I was younger and never read it. Then this year she wrote The Mall and it just brought me back to the 90s. I overall thought it was such a cute story. It also was very nostalgic which added to my experience. I do know they are republishing Sloppy Firsts with new covers. So I do want to pick up the series when that happens.

Erin A. Craig

Okay so I buddy read House of Salt and Sorrows and wow this book. I didn’t write a review about this book but I should of. Spoiler alert, it will be on my favorite books of 2020. I absolutely loved it. It was dark and eerie. It had me questioning if what I read actually happened or if I ended up making it up. I know it’s a retelling but I am unfamiliar with the original story. This was very well done. I plan to read more from Erin A. Craig in the future.

Ciara Smyth

So The Falling in Love Montage randomly came on my radar. I think I saw it randomly in my library’s catalog and was intrigued by it. I ended up really enjoying it a lot. It was cute but also deals with a parent who has dementia. So it is cute but with a bit of heaviness to it. I do want to reread this book and do a review talking about the movies that were mentioned in this film. I really can’t wait to see what Ciara comes out with next.

Nancy Jooyoun Kim

I randomly decided to pick The Last Story of Mina Lee for a blog tour. It wasn’t something I normally gravitated towards but I wanted to try something new. I did end up enjoying this a lot. You can find my full review HERE. I really enjoyed learning about Korean immigrants. That is not a topic I am informed on. I liked learning about them while having this thriller element to the book as well. You get the perspective of Mina who tells you about what it was like moving from Korea to LA. Then you get the perspective of Margot who has lived here her whole life and is trying to find out what happened to her Mom. Both had completely different experiences. It was just very interesting to read about. I am glad I ended up taking a chance on this story because I found it very enjoyable. It’s always fun when you try new things and really like them.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I ended up picking up Mexican Gothic because of all the hype surrounding it. I didn’t end up liking it as much as everyone. However I really ended up enjoying the writing in the book. I did look up her other books and saw some that interested me. So I do plan to check out more of her books even though I wasn’t a fan of the one I read.

Jessica Guess

I ended up reading Cirque Berserk because I kept hearing a lot about it. It also sounded right up my alley. I love slashers and it takes place in an abandoned carnival. I love books that take place in carnival settings. I want more books in that setting. This is honestly what I wish that movie Hell Fest could have been. I can’t wait to read more from her.

Briana Morgan

I ended up buddy reading Unboxed after hearing such good things about it. I was a bit worried because it was in play format but I loved it. It was such a quick read. I love the horror aspect with the modern storyline. I do feel like I read a lot of horror that takes place in the past. It deals with a youtuber buying a package from the dark web and it messes with his life. I did end up buying The Tricker-Treater and Other Stories. So can’t wait to read that.

Here are all the new authors that I read this year and plan to read more of in the future. I was pretty surprised by how many new authors I read this year. I can’t wait to read more from them. Some of these will be on my favorite books of 2020. I already told you one of them which is House of Salt and Sorrow. I can’t wait to share my others with you.
